Rock Painting and Stone Art
Rock painting is as old as mankind. Already in prehistoric time, even 40.000 years ago, men made painted drawings on cave walls or ceilings.
Some works are considered Prehistoric art. Long before mankind could write these artist created sceneries of daily life, animals and actions in their work. Discoveries of such paintings are made all around the globe.
The header image is from the famous Lascaux area, in the South of France. A complex of caves near Montignac with drawings going back 17.000 years. The drawing consist animals living in that time based on fossil evidence.
These days the caves are part of UNESCO World Heritage.
Cave painting is a kind of Rock Art. Beside painting mankind also used rocks for sculpturing, engravement and decoration.
Below we show some amazing photos of these Stone Age art works. Unbelievable to see what one could create without machines and all the equipment and materials we have these days.
